About This Service
This FitPub instance is operated by Komunumo as a public community service.
FitPub is a federated sports and activity platform based on the ActivityPub protocol. Public content may be shared with other federated servers and processed outside this instance.
This service is provided on a best-effort basis without any guarantee of availability, reliability, or data retention.
Accounts and Registration
- Registration is open.
- A valid e-mail address is required.
- E-mail verification is required during registration.
- Accounts are limited to individual persons.
- Organization, company, or group accounts are not permitted.
- Users must use their real name in their profile.
- The username / federated handle may be chosen freely.
- Automated accounts and bots are not permitted.
We reserve the right to reject, suspend, or remove accounts at our discretion.
Content and Federation
FitPub supports multiple visibility levels:
- Public
- Followers only
- Local only
- Private
Public and followers-only content is federated automatically via ActivityPub.
Local-only activities are only visible on this instance and are not federated.
Private activities are not federated.
Deleting an activity or account sends a federation delete request to other servers. However, we cannot guarantee that remote servers will process or honor these deletion requests correctly.
Uploaded Data and Activity Files
Users may upload:
- GPX files
- FIT files
- ZIP archives containing activity files
FitPub also supports importing activities from Komoot.
For Komoot imports, users may provide their Komoot credentials directly to FitPub. These credentials are used only during the import process and are not stored permanently.
Imported data may include:
- Activity title
- Description
- Activity type
- GPS track data
Data We Process
Depending on how the service is used, we may process:
- E-mail addresses
- Profile information
- Profile picture uploads and profile picture URLs
- Activity data
- GPX and FIT files
- GPS and location data
- Heart rate, cadence, power, and similar fitness metrics
- Federation metadata
- IP addresses in server logs
- User agent information
- Authentication and security logs
Activity and GPS data may reveal sensitive personal information such as home locations, routines, movement patterns, and health-related information.
Users are responsible for reviewing uploaded data before publishing activities.
Profile Pictures
Users may configure a profile picture by:
- uploading an image to this instance, or
- providing a publicly accessible image URL.
If neither option is configured, FitPub may request a fallback profile image from Gravatar.
For this purpose, a one-way MD5 hash derived from the user's e-mail address is transmitted to Gravatar. The e-mail address itself is not transmitted.
Gravatar may use this hash to determine whether a profile image exists for the corresponding e-mail address.
The use of Gravatar is optional and only affects users who have not configured a profile picture.
Cookies and Authentication
FitPub uses authentication cookies and JWT-based sessions for logged-in users.
No advertising, tracking, or analytics cookies are used.
Maps and Geographic Data
This service uses:
- OpenStreetMap
- Leaflet
- OpenStreetMap planet data
- GADM geographic datasets
FitPub does not currently use external geocoding services such as Nominatim for activity processing.
Infrastructure and Hosting
This service is hosted in Germany on infrastructure provided by Hetzner.
E-mail delivery is handled by Scaleway.
No third-party analytics, advertising, or error tracking services are used.
Moderation and Acceptable Use
The following content is prohibited:
- Illegal content
- Spam and unsolicited advertising
- Racist, abusive, or hateful content
- Harassment or threats
- Copyright violations
- Impersonation
- Automated posting or bot activity
Moderation is currently handled manually.
Reports, moderation requests, abuse complaints, and legal concerns can be sent to:
Accounts and federated servers may be suspended or blocked if necessary.
Backups and Data Retention
Regular backups are performed.
Server logs are retained for up to 7 days.
If an account is deleted:
- local account data is removed from this instance
- a federated delete request is sent to remote servers
- the username is permanently reserved and cannot be reused
We can only guarantee deletion of data stored on this instance.
Copyright and User Responsibility
Users are solely responsible for the content they upload or publish.
Users must only upload content and activity data they are legally allowed to share.
No Warranty
This service is provided "as is" and "as available".
We make no guarantees regarding:
- availability
- uptime
- federation behavior
- data integrity
- compatibility with other servers
- permanent storage of content
Use this service at your own risk.
Changes
These Terms & Privacy may be updated at any time.
Continued use of the service after changes have been published constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
